Unless Virginia Tech is confident in defying history, Saturday's game at Marshall is must-have if the Hokies are to earn bowl eligibility. Tech (1-2) has already lost non-conference outings against the Big Ten's Purdue and Rutgers. Three non-league defeats are virtual postseason disqualifiers. Indeed, since 2004, when the Hokies joined the conference, 22 ACC teams have gone 1-3 or 0-4 in non-league play during the regular season. Only three of those squads — Wake Forest in 2011, Georgia Tech in '12 and Pitt in '18 — reached the six-victory bowl minimum.
